Course Description:
The range of approaches and interpretations of the meaning and purpose of contemporary art has expanded to levels never before seen. This course introduces major issues in contemporary art and criticism, looks at the relationship between art making and global art worlds, and explores the worldwide shift from modern to contemporary art in a global context. Major artists, movements, and themes in contemporary art are introduced, with an emphasis on how the history of art since the 1960s. As this is an online course, students are expected to be active participants in weekly online discussions on the assigned readings. Students will be assessed based on their class participation, quality of writing assignments, and demonstration of content knowledge through online discussions and final papers. Students will come away from this class with a greater knowledge of the work of contemporary artists from around the world and of contemporary theory.
